The Lotus Formula One racing team started their 2013 season on a winning note Sunday, claiming victory at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Australia.
But it wasn’t just driver Kimi Raikkonen— or the powerful engine at his command — that contributed to the team’s success. They also had the advantage of superior software technology created by DigiPen’s in-house Research & Development team.
Since 2008, DigiPen Research & Development has worked closely with Lotus F1 Team to develop a virtual “race dashboard” system. Using GPS data provided by the FIA governing association, DigiPen’s software provides a visual analytics platform, helping everyone on the team — from race strategists to trackside engineers — in their moment-to-moment decision making. For the past five seasons, DigiPen’s custom technology contributed to 93 races and 30 podium finishes.
Here’s to another season, another victory, and many more to come!
